How To Fake Tan The Non-Orange Way

Summer is here! (apparently!). But for pasty girls even the hottest of heatwaves can leave a chill in the air when they remember that wearing a dress means they'll have to put their lily-white pins on display. Having tried everything from self tan oil to gradual tan, the thought of baring my skin doesn't bring me out in a (heat) rash, and I've got some tips to make you look bronzed and lovely without having to crisp up your delicate skin in the sun.
Everyone knows they should exfoliate more than they do, but it really is key before applying self tan. A product like Whitetobrown Exfoliate* £7.99 is great for this as it has a gel formula which doesn't leave an oily residue on the skin. The exfoliating particles are small and scrubby but you do need to get your palms in there on tough areas like ankles and knees.

After exfoliating to get rid of dead skin cells and any previous tan you had on, applying a moisturiser will ensure that the self tan develops evenly and doesn't stick to dry areas. The St Tropez Tan Optimiser* £5.95 contains Apricot Oil, Shea Butter, Aloe Vera and Jojoba Oil which make sure that skin is moisturised, particularly on the knees, elbows, hands and feet. St Tropez also say the Tan Optimiser can be used on holiday to prolong a tan (I've yet to try this out!).
Once you're smooth and prepared, it's time to self tan. I was sent the Fake Bake Original Self Tan Lotion £12.50 to try out, which is one I haven't used before, but the brand has been around since I first started tanning. The lotion comes enclosed with a pair of blue gloves, but I find that all tans apply best and fastest with a mitt so it's definitely worth getting your hands on one.
The lotion is a dark brown colour which smells to me a bit like lychee, and it smooths in easily to create an even layer. After leaving the product on overnight, you're left with a medium tan that's not orange and definitely a better colour than you'd get from a day in the English sun. You can reapply the tan the next night for a darker colour or use an oil-free moisturiser to make sure it fades evenly.
Self tanning can add a bit of extra time to your routine, but it means you'll be a nice sun kissed shade, even if you haven't faced the sun for a while!

Body Contouring with No More White Bits Self Tan

THE TAN
No More White Bits is a new self tanning brand from Anatomicals which launches into Asda this month and aims to provide tans for 'active lifestyles' that are quick to apply and easy to maintain. With all its products, which include mousse, cream and gel, priced at £4 or less, the brand has hands down beat other affordable tans for price alone before you've even opened the bottle.

While I'm not the biggest fan of the blue and white packaging it does stand out, and I haven't tried any other tanning products that openly market themselves towards men as well as women. Honestly on first use of the Instant Self Tan Mousse in Dark* the instructions did baffle me a little- it states that it's an instant tanning mousse (which to me means wash-off and non developing) but that it does develop, although it doesn't say how long to leave it on for. The mousse applies very dark and turns into an easily spreadable liquid on the skin with that slightly greenish tinge that we've now come to expect from self tans. It has a strong lotus flower scent that isn't for sensitive noses and I have to make sure I've oiled my knees and elbows well as it tends to grab these areas if theyre dry. I'm so over waiting around for tans to sink in or getting dressed and sticking to my clothes, so I'm really pleased that this formula dries quickly and feels smooth on the skin. On first go I took a guess at the developing time be around 4-6 hours and I think I was right, even though washing off the guide colour leaves me a bit pasty in comparison, the tan gradually gets darker over the next day or two so I actually end up darker than expected (no complaints there as I'm a natural ghost!).

The colour is a nice natural deep brown and the wear time is about 5 days for me before I start to look like I've got a farmer's tan. Thankfully it doesn't leave me scaly or patchy like a lot of dark tans can. I'm really impressed with No More White Bits as it's definitely the best budget tan I've tried, and I'll definitely be picking up the cream formula when I next do my shopping!

THE METHOD
Body contouring definitely isn't something I'd do every time I wear self tan (which is often) but it's great for a special ocassion or if you just need a little body confidence boost. I first came up with the idea when for some reason my chest was a looking a little less than full, and from there it spread through trial and error to the rest of my body. The principle is really the same as contouring the face- to define, create shape and give the illusion of a slimmer form. The effect is subtle once the tan's guide colour is washed off but it definitely makes a difference and once you try it, you'll see for yourself.
This works equally well with mousses or creams and a mitt (which is essential for ensuring everything is buffed out), and can be achieved either by applying one layer of tan, washing off and darkening specific areas with another layer, or by waiting for the first layer to dry and then applying on top straight away, which is much quicker and easier.
As with bronzing the cheeks, the idea is to blend the second layer of tan into the first to ensure there are no harsh lines or obvious streaks. The highlights really aren't as important as the shadows but they do give more contrast, and can be created by simpling buffing away at the first layer of tan with a dry mitt or sponge. My drawing skills haven't really done the poor lady in the image above any justice, so I've run through each area below and the ideas can be modified for other body shapes.

THE BOOBS-  I was given the bittersweet blessing of small boobs (can't fill out a top properly, but also don't get back ache), so this is the area I focus on. I can't speak for other shapes but deepened shadows underneath and to the sides really make them look fuller and more shapely against my (boney) chest.  A highlight just above the shadow will create the contrast which gives the illusion that the nips are sitting further out from the body.
THE WAIST- As with a bodycon dress that gives the look of a smaller waist by making the edges of the body almost disappear, a darker shadow will draw the eye to the smaller lighter area at the centre of the body (the same idea can be applied to the dreaded 'bingo wings' at the underneath of the arms).
THE STOMACH- A layer of tan will darken all shadows, whether wanted or not, and a shadow below the stomach that shouts 'look at me, I'm a muffin top!' is something no one wants. This can be evened out by blending a darker line along the most projecting part of the stomach, and buffing away the tan underneath where the darkest shadow lies to almost reverse the effect.
THE HIPS- I really like the look of wide hips so if anything I would highlight them, but there is the matter of stretchmarks which I don't really want to show off. My tiger stripes have faded to a point where I don't dislike them as much as I used to, but a good layer of tan helps hide the 'shine' and mackerel effect that they can give to the skin.
Thigh gaps are so last year, but for those of us in the touching thigh crew a little slimming illusion with a second layer of tan doesn't go amiss!  This also helps prevent the tell-tale faded tan patches from hair removal.
THE LEGS- A dark self tan buffed under the bum can make it look perkier but, as I talked about in my Vita Liberata Skinfinish post, a highlight down the centre of the legs can do wonders not only for slimming but for adding a little glamour that makes you look put together for an evening out. If the thought of rubbing off your lovely deep tan doesn't appeal, a liquid highlighter or even a sweep of highlighting powder can work wonders for the pins!

What do you think of body contouring, is it something you've tried, or might try in the future?

Haul- MUA / Mac / Cosmo / Laurens Way

I've been a bit naughty and let loose with my bank card in the last few days so am fully expecting another call from the bank to give me a ticking off about not moving money round enough again, but nevermind! This time I wont care so much because I have some lovely goodies to show for it that I cant wait to try out, its only 9 days into the month and I've already bought most of my wishlist.. whoops!

Mac Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium Deep / Lauren's Way Darker than Dark Bronzing Lotion / Olay Everyday Sunshine in Deep / Cosmopolitan Blend Perfection Sponge / MUA Undressed Palette & Undress Me Too / MUA Undress Your Skin Powder Highlighter / MUA E3 Blending Brush & F2 Stippling Brush / Mua Matte Perfect Primer / MUA Extreme Felt Liner in Black / MUA Power Pouts in Irreplaceable & Heart Broken / MUA Out There Plumping Gloss in Nude, Sienna, Peach Shimmer, Pink Sugar, Shocking Pink & Candy Pink /

I suppose this is more of an MUA haul than anything else (lots of things on sale!) but I did get a few little bits from other brands, the Mac MSF I'm excited to try out as a bronzer/contour colour and Lauren's Way is one of my favourite tans so I'm so pleased to use this again. There was a bit of postal drama as one of the packets split and postman was picking Power Pouts out of his post bag. A couple of bits had gone missing but I managed to pick them up from Superdrug so hopefully can get a refund, do you think the post men are all down the sorting office smothered in matte primer and plumping gloss??!

I had a no make up day today as my tan was developing so did some hand swatches but haven't tried out all of the goodies yet- I have tried the Out There glosses and love all the colours especially Nude and Sienna (the orange on the left), they also have quite a big plumping action on me and I could feel it in my lips more than I expected but I think that's a big plus especially as they were only £1 each (hence why I bought 6!).
The colours of the Power Pouts are also lovely although I didn't have them on for long, and I tried the highlighter just in the corners of my eyes to avoid disturbing my fake tan and it gave such a gorgeous glow I think it might look great on the lids as well as cheeks!
The two brushes are super soft and I'm looking forward to using them although I was a bit disappointed that the Stippling brush's handle was so long as I wanted a smallish one to put in my make up bag (another reason to get a new make up bag!), Ive also washed the Blend Perfection Sponge ready for trying out when I get my face on tomorrow.

I'm really pleased with my purchases and looking forward to trying them all out and writing some reviews, I still have a few bits from my last trip to Asda to write about so I'd better get typing!

Let me know if you have any of these products and what you think about them, or if youre planning a little haul yourself?

My New New Favourite Self Tan- Vita Liberata

Im a self  confessed fake tan addict and have tried out the majority of brands from Garnier to Xen Tan, my old favourite self tan WhitetoBrown (review here) only has about one application left in the bottle so while I was having a browse through the tans online I spotted a luxury set from Irish brand Vita Liberata containing Rich Siken Chocolate tan, Rich Silken Chocolate and 24ct Silken Shimmer wash off tan I knew I had to have it!

This brand has some big seeling points- it boasts that its the 'A' List tanning range, that the tan dries instantly, it has no smell and is both organic and paraben free. The Rich Silken Chocolate contains only organic DHA (the chemical that changes the colour of skin), no parabens or alcohol and no fragrance at all. One of the things I hate about fake tanning is that I am often left sticky and have to hang around in a towel for a few hours before bed to allow the tan to dry and not stick or streak when I put my pyjamas on. I also cant stand smelly fake tans, one of the worst offenders for me was Xen Tan which I felt left me smelling like a sweet orange yoghurt (I tried Xen Tan a while ago so they may have changed their formula since then).

Each of the three products is housed in a plastic pump bottle- allowing you to see how much product is left and not slipping out of your mitted hand like some squeezy bottles do. The Rich Silken Chocolate is a deep dark brown without a hint of orange, while the 24ct Silken Shimmer is the same rich colour with tiny light catching gold flecks. As promised both the Rich Silken Chocolate body and face are completely fragrance free but the Silken Shimmer has a faint slightly melony smell, very fresh and definitely not off putting.

The tans are full of natural nourishing ingredients and glide easily over the skin. They blend to a streak free finish and the claims were right- they do dry instantly, perfect for me but you have to be quite quick blending out any uneven bits. I find that even though they dry quickly the formulas are very moisturising and leave my skin feeling smooth without any bumps or flakiness. As with many tans the guide colour on the Rich Silken Chocolate is quite dark and the tan fully develops in 4-6 hours so is perfect for leaving on overnight and showering off the next day. The 24ct Shimmer is great if you want a quick sunkissed look but without the faff of a full self tan routine, the colour applies easily and makes me look lovely and bronzed. I was a bit sceptical about the shimmer in this product but once on the skin it leaves a nice glow without making me look like a glitterball!
All the products in this set came with a little leaflet that includes info about the brand and advice and directions for applying tan to every part of the body. This set usually retails for £57.50 but I bought mine from Cheap Smells for £26.45, you can find the set here and the full range here.

Overall Vita Liberata is definitely my new new favourite self tan and next on my list to try from the range is the Intense Silken Mousse for body. My one complaint is that the bottles aren't big enough for me! Ive used the tans for a few weeks now and almost half is gone from the Rich Silken Chocolate bottle but maybe its just because I get a little tan-happy at times and smother myself like its going out of fashion. All in all, im a very happy (and brown) bunny.

Have you tried any products from Vita Liberata?

WhitetoBrown Self Tan Review

WhitetoBrown Self Tan Lotion 250ml RRP £15
So on my quest to find the best affordable self tan I came accross a brand called WhitetoBrown. I've tried nearly all the self tan brands out there but could only find one review online about them, it was a good review though so I thought I'd take my chances. I managed to pick up their self tan lotion on Ebay for just under £10, and they also do tan extenders, exfoliators, instant tan, tan wipes and tanning acessories. They also have products for professionals and pro spray tanning systems. WhitetoBrown claims they use 'the ideal pH balance to work in harmony with the DHA in tanning products to optimise your tan'.

The 250ml lotion comes in a sleek white bottle with an understated logo and press down top.
When I received the lotion and took off the top I was pleased to see a very dark almost reddish brown (no orange here) and not a hint of shimmer or sparkle. The tan applies very well and is very moisturising, although Id never had a problem with fake tans clinging to dry parts like elbows or knees before and this lotion did make them look slightly darker than other parts.

The dark reddish brown guide colour
The colour develops in 2-4 hours, I put this on before bed and didnt have any problem with lasting stickiness or streaks from my pjs. The guide colour in this tinted lotion is very very dark which is great when you put it on, especially for an english winter ghost like me, but is quite disappointing when you shower it off as you can literally see half your colour dissappearing down the drain! Despite this I was left with a tan that I could usually only get with 2-3 applications of my normal self tan, it lasted about a week even with shaving and still looked freshly applied after exfoliating my face.

A note about using this lotion on your face- although it didnt break me out it did fill up my pores with the dark brown colour, but this was remedied by gently exfoliating.
The only downsides are the squeezy bottle which makes getting the product out a bit difficult and due to the dark guide colour if you spill it anywhere it is a pain to remove- its stained my white shelf and has actually stained the label on the bottle a light red! I apply this lotion using a mitt but did try with plastic gloves and found it went on slightly streaky and took a lot of work to even out.

Despite the few downsides, this is my new favourite fake tan and I will definitely be purchasing again!

My favourite used to be Soltan Beautiful Bronze, whats your favourite self tan?
